Chinese acrobats draw fair interest
2010-08-06

The Acrobats of Hebei, China, have emerged as one of the stars of the Douglas County Fair, Oregon, US.

The troupe of eight performers who range in age from 19 to 25 have attracted large crowds to their twice-daily shows on a stage in front of the Floral Building.

"They are very talented, and people are very appreciative that they're here,” Fairgrounds Director Harold Phillips said.

Phillips saw the group at the Oregon State Fair and was impressed with their tumbling routines. Group members were trained in acrobatics since they were children.

The acrobats perform a 45-minute set at 2 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

About 11,000 people attended the fair Wednesday. That was 2,300 fewer than attendance on the second day last year, but that day featured a concert by Huey Lewis and the News. The 13,300 people who came to the fair that day, including 9,000 that stayed for the concert, made it the best-attended day of the 2009 fair.

A crowd Phillips estimated at 3,000 watched the Little River Band perform Wednesday. The Australian band was well received and band members stayed afterward to sign autographs.

Country singer Miranda Lambert will appear 7 p.m. today at the PremierWest Bank Amphitheater.

Today, active-duty military members will be admitted free, compliments of Seven Feathers Casino Resort. U.S. Cellular will provide two-for-one admissions all day.

Teenagers can get a dollar off the $9 admission price all week by bringing a can of food for the United Community Action Network.

"We're hoping to collect a large amount of food for that group,” Phillips said.
