Hebei tries out child injury prevention project
2013-06-21

A two-month child safety program, the first of its kind, is taking place in 23 primary schools, in Shijiazhuang, the capital of Hebei province, according to personnel at its center for disease control and prevention.

The city is using a symptom surveillance system, for students in primary school to collect information on accidents and injuries both in and outside school, including major problems such as traffic accidents and falls.

Updates on injuries are expected to provide important information on dangerous areas and risks, so authorities can provide suggestions on how to guarantee student safety.

According to the center for disease control and prevention, accidents and injuries are a major cause of death and disabilities among young children and are responsible for the deaths of more than 50,000 children each year, or 31.3 percent of deaths among young people.

In addition, a survey from Safe Kids Worldwide, a global nonprofit organization, showed that at least one in four of these 50,000 young deaths are caused by accidents and injuries, and nearly 45 percent happen in the home.
